The Minions have faced supervillains, secret agents, and even themselves—but now, they’re up against artificial intelligence. Universal and Illumination return with Despicable Me 5: Minions Mayhem, a laugh-packed, surprisingly timely adventure that pits classic slapstick against cutting-edge tech.

Plot: When Tech Gets Too Smart… and Too Yellow
Just when Gru thought parenting teens was tough enough, the unthinkable happens—the Minions are kidnapped.
Their captor? Theo Byte, a cocky young tech mogul who’s built AI copies of the Minions that are faster, smarter… and far more chaotic. Byte plans to replace the originals with his synthetic army and corner the market on loyal, low-cost digital labor.
To stop him, Gru must go undercover in Silicon Valley, posing as a tech investor—with the help of his now-teenage daughter, Edith, who’s more into hacking than ballet these days. Together, they’ll sneak into Byte’s fortress of screens, dodge killer robot clones, and try to bring the real Minions home.
New & Returning Cast
Steve Carell returns as Gru, this time grappling with smart homes, viral drones, and his growing family.
Simu Liu joins the franchise as Theo Byte, the smooth-talking villain with a digital army and a serious god complex.
Storm Reid voices Teen Edith, who steals scenes as the sarcastic hacker with a heart.
Awkwafina lends her voice to a rogue AI Minion copy—equal parts glitchy and genius—who might just switch sides.
Mayhem Highlights
- Tech Gone Bananas: Expect 3D-printed banana traps, rogue algorithms, and viral Minion clones gone wrong.
- Family Comedy: As Gru and Edith team up, the story explores growing pains and digital-age parenting with warmth and laughs.
- Social Satire: Underneath the gags, the movie pokes fun at AI, startup culture, and our obsession with productivity—even if it’s from a 3-foot-tall yellow assistant.
Final Byte
Despicable Me 5: Minions Mayhem proves the franchise still has plenty of tricks—and giggles—up its sleeve. With its blend of heartfelt family dynamics, cutting-edge parody, and the timeless chaos of the Minions, this latest chapter is primed to delight kids and sneak a few smart laughs past their parents.
Because even in a world of AI… there’s still no replacing the original mayhem-makers.
